2017 IFBB Arctic Pro Championships
Men's 212 Bodybuilding & Women's Physique
(Anchorage, Alaska - June 24, 2017)
July 25, 2017: Held in conjunction with the NPC Arctic Muscle Fest (covered earlier on this website), year two of this
event is part of the Olympia qualifying series of the IFBB Pro League. Northwest competitor Mark Dugdale took
top spot again in Men's 212 followed by Ukraine's Oleksandr Slobodyanyuk. Mark was the only returnee from 2016, it's great to
see word of this contest spread and attract some of the best in this class. We'd heard that a judge remarked that any of the top 5
placers here could very handily win one of the numerous IFBB Pro League shows held in the Lower 48. International talent from Iraq to
Sweden and South Korea, we see this show hopefully growing even more in the future.

Women's Physique was extremely competitive with a variety of physique styles and shapes, all in great condition! In terms of posing, some graceful artistry
shown, starting with 1st Place winner Ekaterina Grima of Ukraine, whose significant other Oleksandr Slobodyanyuk placed 2nd in 212. Size, shape and
beautifully capped shoulders were hard to ignore. 2nd place went to last year's winner Anne Luise Freitas (photo below), whose "X" frame is a marvel in the sport.
The Pacific Northwest was nicely represented here, with Portland's Jessica Martin placing 3rd and in her very first Pro show, British Columbia's
Emilija Martic placing 4th. Having known Emilija since she started in the sport in 2010, it was a proud moment for the bodybuilding/fitness
community in the Vancouver, B.C. area for sure! Rounding out the Top 5 was Krista Dunn, quite a lineup.

Of significance was 6th placer Doina Gorun-Benagli of Italy, aesthetic lines and a beautiful presentation, her photoshoot the next day really
spoke to that. See the Menu Pages below for a sneak peek feature. This was Doina's first Pro show in Physique, so a good result. She then went on a week later having had that
experience, to win the IFBB San Jose Pro, qualifying her for the 2017 Olympia! That is expected to be her next show as of this writing, laser
focused on it from July. Having had positive experiences up in Alaska in 2016, Pro's Geraldine Morgan and Jodi Miller returned to compete again.
Of note was local favorite Sharlin Maldonado...she may be "small" in stature but constantly improving from year to year, nice muscle shape and
looked right at home onstage!

The impetus for this reporter to make the trek up north again was to bring some positive media attention to this fledgeling show. To that extent,
Muscle Insider Magazine were kind enough to publish photos from both divisions, links below:

The competitor list (numbers) along with the final placings are on this page for reference. Congrats to promoters Shawn and Cinzia
Clapp on another well-run event!
